Why should I raft with Wakpa Wilderness Adventures?
We offer an experience that few other operators do. We raft on rivers that are off the beaten track. We believe it's important to have small sized trips so you can really enjoy the rafting and appreciate the breathtaking scenery. We pride ourselves on being professionals, making our guests' safety our highest priority.
What do I need to bring with me for a day trip?
All you need to raft with Wakpa are some dry clothes, a bathing suit and a towel. All the rafting gear is supplied, including wetsuits. Of course if you're planning on spending the night at our camp on the Highwood, don't forget your personal camping gear. It's never a bad idea to bring some sun screen and a raincoat too! After all this is the Rockies.
I'm a weak/non swimmer. Can I still come rafting with Wakpa Wilderness Adventures?
This depends entirely on you. As long as you're willing to accept that there is always a small chance you could end up 'swimming' on any raft trip. You will be equipped with a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) (or lifejacket) which will ensure even the weakest swimmers will float. If you're uncertain, give us a call 1888 670 8853 and we can help determine if rafting is right for you.
Yes, this one's for sure. Some seats are wetter than others, but there's no dry seat!
Our goal is to keep you in the raft. If you listen to your guide well and paddle hard there is a very good chance you will not fall out. However, adventure sports are unpredictable and there is no way to guarantee that you will not fall out of the raft. Very few people fall out and it is not uncommon for us to go several trips without anyone falling out of the boat. The majority of people that fall out are within a few feet of the raft and not in the water for more than a few seconds.
Similar to falling out of the raft we try very hard to keep the boat from flipping. Flips are very rare but they can happen and we are trained to deal with this if it does.
How safe is white water rafting?
As with any adventure activity there are some risks associated with white water rafting. Our role is to minimize those risks and still allow for an exciting, fun raft trip. We do this in a number of ways. We give detailed safety talks to inform our guests of the risks they're undertaking. We have safety gear exceeding industry standard and have emergency procedures in place. Our guides have up to date qualifications in advanced wilderness first aid, rafting, swift water rescue and all are qualified trip leaders. We also complete regular in-house training specific to the river we're running and have regular safety meetings to keep our risk management skills high.
How many people can fit in a raft?
We are currently running 14ft boats. These boats can accommodate up to 7 people, plus the guide. These smaller boats allow us to better manoeuvre the twisting rapids on the Highwood River and as an added bonus, they make for a more exciting ride!
Yes, but if you want to take the camera onto the raft with you make sure that it is waterproof, everything will be getting wet! Wakpa has a photographer on every trip to capture the action down some of the most exciting rapids, so remember to smile - or scream, it looks the same in the photos.
Can my group be in the same raft?
If your group is 7 or less we can make sure you're in the same raft. For groups of more than 7 you'll be split into more than one raft, but we'll do our best to keep your group together. For bigger groups you can have your own private raft trip and camp, we offer great discounts for group bookings!
